Evaporative cooling efficiency

Recently, I came across the below chart showing evaporative cooling efficiency in UAE:

This chart actually show the theoretical supply air temperature from a single stage evaporative air cooler. While this means an optimal efficiency, still very useful to expect what to get from such type of outdoor cooling in different conditions.
Keep in mind that actual evaporative coolers efficiency is less, so maybe increase the expected supply air temperature by 10% or so.

What is supply air temperature?

It is basically the temperature of air coming out of the evaporative air cooler. No need to say more about it.

When to expect better cooling efficiency?

In one word, not in very humid ambient conditions. It is all at the end basic physics. The more humidity already in the air, the less water to evaporate from the cooler, the less cooling effect.
In fact, in extreme humidity you would only benefit from the fan breeze.

Still in the Emirates, some methods are used to enhance the evaporative coolers performance. We will just leave these for another article.
